Kiltmaking question

I have started traditional kiltmaking. I've done several kilts but seem to have an ongoing problem that I'm hoping someone in this group can help me with.

The apron is supposed to flare from the hips to the knees so that it's wider at the bottom. This theoretically helps prevent the pleats from pulling open at the sides. My question is, how much of a flare should there be? I've tried making the apron as much as four inches wider at the bottom than at the hips, and on a couple of the kilts that still wasn't enough. I'm concerned that if I flare it TOO much, then the bottom of the apron will wrap around the sides and look unattractive.

Can anyone give me some advice?

I've lost too much weight to ever wear these again. I have three u-kilts; a black denim size 42s, a black mocker size 42m, and a night watch camo (discontinued) size 42m. All three a gently used, and in good shape.
Gay and Kilted

Howdy folks, I'm new to the tribe and wanted to say hello first off. Maybe someone can help me out on an issue I've had. Is there any gay kilt wearers or admirers in the group? I've been wearing kilts since sophmore year in high school and have always been told things like, "you're not gay, you're just an exentric artist type" and things like that. It's been from gay and straight folk,

I never contected my kilt wearing to my sexual orientation. Has any one else come up with this type of issue. Or if you're straight and a kilt wearer have you been called gay for it? the time my best friend who's straight wore my kilt, he was told he was gay. I'm getting confused on all of it. If anyone has any comments I'd be greatly appriated.

thanks all,
shads

Traditional Scottish (and north Irish) modern kilts, mediaeval great kilts and ladies' kilt-skirts, their wearers, their fans, and even their adaptors (e.g. to punk fashion). Utilikilt and other non-trad kilt fans are also welcome. There are no restrictions on pictures posted. No mystery as to what is worn under their kilts.

At least to me, these folks are new on the scene AlphaKilts: http://www.alphakilts.com/ their retailer TKN : http://www.kiltednation.com/home.php?cat=87

I haven't bought one yet, but their kilts look promising. In particular, the Argyll and the Glasgow have Box Pleats, the pics look intriguing, different from any other kilts I know of...

I have no connection to AlphaKilts or The Kilted Nation, their retailer.

kilt shops in London

Heading over to London in a couple weeks.
Any suggestions for a good kilt shop in and about London?
Good meaning:good quality, reasonable price, and
tolerant of Americans with no clan affiliation.

(Can't make it to Scotland for this trip, sigh).
Willing to just get measured, place the order,
and have it shipped when completed if needed.

Done mostly utilikilt up till now. Thinking about a good woolen
kilt for colder days.
No tartan preference. Would be fine with solid black.
Debating about getting the full kit (jacket, hose, etc.) or just another kilt.

thanks

Scottish troops must share scarce kilts

Thought I would share this.

By BEN McCONVILLEMon Dec 18, 3:40 PM ET

Great Scot! A shortage of ceremonial kilts could leave thousands of soldiers without a stitch of plaid to wear as they parade to the skirl of the bagpipes.

Military officials said Monday that more than 5,000 Scottish soldiers are having to share their kilts because defense chiefs have not finalized a contract to buy enough of the garments to go around.

The men, who face regular tours of duty in south Iraq and Afghanistan, have just 320 kilts, or one for every 15 soldiers.

Combat troops wore the traditional Highland garb in battle as late as World War I, but now the plaid kilts are used in ceremonial uniform.

New kilts are needed for all Scottish soldiers following the August 2006 merger of centuries-old regiments into a single Royal Regiment of Scotland.

"A planned deployment of kilts will be agreed with the Royal Regiment of Scotland on a roll-out basis with ... the full program being completed by January 2008," a Ministry of Defense spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with government policy.

The Ministry of Defense has refused to say who has won the contract to supply the kilts; in the meantime, soldiers will have to share.

The 320 kilts provided so far have been supplied by Argyll Bagpipes and Kilts on a trial basis. The full contract is worth up to $1.95 million, taking two years to complete and will involve 15,000 yards of fabric.

"The kilt is psychologically important for the identity of Scottish soldiers," said Lt. Col. Willy Macnair, who served in the defunct Queen's Own Highlander regiment. "It may mean that some soldiers in this (new) regiment, by the time they leave, may never have worn it."

Scottish lawmakers and veterans had opposed the merger of the traditional regiments, which saw action in both world wars and the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa.

Hello all,

I'm an avid kilt-wearer and enthusiast of the traditional great kilt and was wondering if any of you have come across someone who dyes, weaves, and sells/barters the wool for a full on traditional fileadh mor, a la late 17th century. I'm not a re-enactor or anything, but I am seriously interested in seeing what one of these original style garments would feel like - lanolin and everything. I mean, you'd have to use antique breed wool so as to get the right fibers, if you know what I mean. I have as close as one can get to this, basically a few yards of tartan plaid to belt on, but it's not the same with modern wool. I mean ... it's hardly water proof or even resistant.

My thanks in advance.
New Tribe: The Magical History Tour.

Hi,

I created this new tribe because it seemed like a good place to allow discussion that didn't quite have a home in the faire, history, SCA or conventions tribes. The magical part is in the fact that we recreate pieces of history as if by magic.

So I am making this a thread posting because it seems the new format of the tribe cards makes it so that most people never see the listings.

tribes.tribe.net/magicalhistorytour

Whether your events and reenactments include magical influences or not, when an event really comes together and people forget that they are in the modern world for a while and immerse themselves in the experience, the event comes alive and the atmosphere is magical and full of possibilities and romance. That time, no matter how brief, is what so many live for, whether it is for themselves or to feel the power of helping others experience it.

This is a tribe for discussion of all aspects of historic re-enactment and re-creation as well as recreation. This includes medieval festivals, viking festivals, renaissance faires, pirates, buckskinner events, etc.

Historic fiction and fantasy are welcome as well.

Kilts in Bali

Hi kilt lovers,

I was in Bali a couple of weekends ago and wore my Utilikilt all weekend and I swear they must never have seen a kilt before... it was a riot... although I did get jack of it after two days of people falling over laughing and shouting at me in the street!

Quite a few Balinese men wear sarongs, so I thought they'd be more cool with it, but many, many Balinese wanted to tell me that they had never seen anything like it!

[then I flew to Darwin (Australia) and toured Kakadu national park for 4 days. It is the early wet season so about 36 C and 100% humidity.... great weather for the canvas kilt!]

Resizing a kilt?

So I purchased a kilt at the folsom St. Fair this summer and since when from a size 44 to a size 38 (go atkins...) I'd like to get this kilt adjusted for my new smaller size. Anyone know a place in the SF bay area that will resize a kilt?

It's similar to a utilikilt, but made by a different company, who was out of arizona I believe. I wish I remembered who it was, but I don't.

Greetings. I'm a newbie here. My name is Phil and I make most of my own kilts, though I own a few utilikilts as well. I try to wear them as often as I can, which isn't too hard now that I have more kilts than trousers. If anyone needs a kilt made for them, I just put up my own website, so feel free to pay me a visit.

Also, they weren't quite sure how to wear the kilts, so the piper for the wedding had to clue them in. :)

Hello

Wanted to introduce myself, I sold Kilts and accessories for seven years.
Any questions you may have regarding kilts, tartans, clan crests how to wear, etc. I can help with.
I notice a few people are unsure about family names and tartans.
First, my Granny always said, "wear what you like, chances are you are related to them anyway." but I understand why people still want to wear their family tartan.
The difference between a plaid and a tartan is, a plaid is a bunch of stripes woven together in a pleasing manner, a tartan is a set number of colors and are registered with the Court of the Lord Lyons, the overseeing body of all things Clan related.
A really great resource is "Tartan For Me" by Philip D. Smith.
Not all families have tartans and most of the ones that you see now are fairly modern, having only been registered in the last 50 years or so.
Some tartans registered are not made by the woolen mills because of lack of demand but if there is a tartan registered and you want it made, there are mills that will make them if you order a reasonable minimum and it will cost a few dollars more per yard.
Forgive me if any of this has been covered before.
C

For those who are unsure what the difference is:
Modern is the colors of the tartan, all bright and beautiful.
Hunting is more earth tone colors.... because you could wear it hunting, it wuld blend into the surrounding landscape.
Weathered can be either the Hunting or Modern colors, it is just a much more toned down color, as it would be if the tartan was older or "weathered" .

i've made a half dozen kilts for myself, mostly copying the utilikilt design *yoink* i'm a patent violater =]

but i've got a problem, if i make the kilt the right length, middle knee (22.5" for me), my package rests on the furniture. but if i make it long enough so that i'm not resting my balls in unfriendly places, the kilt is so long it feels like i'm wearing a dress.

has anybody else experienced this, and could tell me how to fix it? or do i just have an enormous ass that's hogging all the length?

I have always loved Scotland...One day I very much hope to visit. I must admit though, that my primary reason for joining this particular Tribe is that I think there is nothing sexier than a man in a kilt.....

Utilikilt at Woodstock '94

How long have utilikilts been around anyway?

I've got a big book I bought recently called Hippie by Barry Miles. A fairly complete history of the 60's counterculture.

On page 377 are two pictures from Woodstock '94. In the lower one folks are getting down in the mud from the broken sewage lines (eww). At the far right is a thoroughly mud covered fellow wearing what appears to be a utilikilt complete with saddlebag pockets.

Anyone else have the book who can second this sighting?

They're cool & all and I would love to have a few of 'em... but DAMN, they're expensive! Typically start at over $100 a piece and nearly $200 for one with the "accessories" like external pockets and stuff.

Any other options for the more budget-conscious wanna-be kilt wearers?

Recently spent a vacation down in Orlando and had my first-ever visit to EPCOT. As part of the whole "world" theme, they have different "countries" that you can visit and engage in consumerist activities such as shopping, boozing, and eating. As were passing through "Scotland," there was a pop/rock band, doing a sort of Big Country kinda thing, and all the musicians were wearing kilts. And the accompanying shoe of choice was....wait for it!...Doc Martens!

The funniest thing was the amplified bagpiper was about 6'3" and the lead guitarist next to him was about 5'7".

The only reason I even attempted watching "Barb Wire" was for Udo (sorry, guys, I'm just not into Pam Anderson that much). Once I found his official website, I was a bit befuddled to find this photo of him in a kilt.

Kilts lost to house fire

The horror!

So last week the live/work space that I and several other artists called home pretty much burnt to the ground. Though the fire began in the shop area, it quickly spread to the house, and my room in particular wound up gutted.

Upon returning home my thoughts went immediately to the safety of my friends and family. By the time that I had learned that everyone was okay, my mind had already reflexively begun the process of cataloging everything that had been lost. Topping this list were, sadly, all four of my beloved Utilikilts, including the black leather one that I blew a couple of months of rent money on last spring, when they first went on sale.

Ah well. As an anarchist buddhist punk and a long-time burner, I'm pretty used to the concepts of impermanence and detachment. But dayum! These were my beloved UK's! The coming days. weeks and months are going to be esepcially cold without them.

So, my fellow Utiliclan bretheren, please raise a glass (or shed a tear) for me, and remember: ALWAYS WEAR A KILT! (That way you'll at least save one of them in a disaster.)

- Slim (aka Aaron Muszalski)

Why do I soooooo dig guys wearing kilts? I suppose I could blame it on my genetic heritage (being almost entirely of Scottish extraction), but I just think it's dead sexy. But only with boots, not with those awful Tevas or Birkenstocks you see in some of the photos on the Utilikilts gallery. Bleeeeeech!

I'm curious-- how to the men in kilts feel about women in kilts? I've seen plenty of women in them, even in official regiments, and I've worn one myself as a Drum Major and member of the Stewart clan. However, I've had mixed reactions, oddly enough from people who aren't Scottish but have talked to their one Scots buddy back in '78 who got apoplectic at the idea.

SF-area kiltmaker

I can highly recommend Celtic Craft Centre, on Columbus near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. They'll even do custom tartans at no or minimal extra expense, and really bend over backwards for you. The kilts and sporrans are made in Scotland by long-time professionals, and the prices are quite reasonable (compared to other kiltmakers, I mean. As well all know, kilts are expensive since they're hand-tailored.)

Just call ahead of time if you are going down there. They are often out-of-town on short notice for Scottish games events and other functions, and I believe the are closed Mon., or Sun. and Mon., I forget.
